One Month as a Stay-at-Home Dad in France
Today marks one month since I stopped being the main breadwinner, giving me some time to reflect on life as a stay-at-home dad.
The last few weeks have been absolutely packed: travelling and moving to Nancy, finding an apartment, arranging electricity and fast internet, and keeping our daughter healthy and happy.
Here is a brief update on the journey so far, followed by a few goals for our time here.
We spent our first two weeks in Nancy in a fantastic Airbnb apartment. It had only one bedroom, but also a good kitchen, was exceptionally clean, and made an excellent base for exploring the city. We then spent one night in a rather questionable researcher dorm, toured Burgundy, and stayed four nights in a very small ibis Budget hotel room.
Although we found an apartment relatively easily, signing the contract took a little longer because the landlord was on holiday. We found a comfortable apartment in Nancy. I have eliminated almost all distractions from my life in order to be the best parent possible, and only three goals remain for the next year:
Learn a little French
Learn how to be a better chef
Learn how to sharpen knives
That’s it. This is, of course, in addition to caring for a young child and helping them thrive. I have particularly enjoyed the ideas in 30 Million Words as well as No-Drama Discipline, and have already begun to see positive results. Wish me luck! P.S. There will also likely be lots of travel over the next year, too.
