The date is June 25, 2007, and I’ve sinned. Let me explain.

I’ve been involved in technology for quite some time and have long been opposed to Facebook, MySpace, and Friendster. I never felt any urge to join; I always thought people spent too much time updating their profiles instead of writing something useful or insightful, or doing something productive. Two months ago, I broke my rule and joined MySpace for a single day because I needed to contact someone.

Today, I really broke that rule. Sean and I have a web app idea in the works that could be very successful. Access to Facebook’s API would be highly useful, so I created an account. For the last hour, I’ve been adding people I’ve known over the years, and I must say, this is surprisingly addictive. Click, click, click. Just seeing people’s thumbnails is interesting, particularly how they have changed. I wonder whether people think the same of me.

If I may, I’ll make one small observation. I flipped through the graduation years for my high school and noticed an interesting trend: there is certainly a correlation between graduation year and the number of people on Facebook. The class of 1999 had only nine people, rising steadily to more than 80 in 2002 and almost 100 in 2003. I wonder whether the same is true for other high schools around the country.

Well, I’d better not be a hypocrite and waste my time writing a few paragraphs about wasting time. I have to finish a site by Friday, before I leave for China and the big adventure.
