Chinese New Year

Published on Feb. 17, 2007 in Taiwan

It is Chinese New Year! Today is the 17th, the last night of the Chinese Lunar Year. Early in the morning we packed some of the things from my apartment and did a pseudo-cleaning, then came back to Yan-Shih's and spent some time cleaning her dining room.

The highlight was at dinnertime when Yan-Shih, myself and her mom sat down to a rather big feast. Her mom had prepared a decent amount of seafood for us to eat, including some raw fish, something her mom knew I love. She also bought me a few beers, since she also knew I can't stand rice wine -- bad experience in Zhongshan, ask Ian if you want the details.

With dinner over Yan-Shih and I sat down to watch a movie, and near the end started to hear the fireworks. In a fully unorganized way, right at midnight, thousands (or so it seemed, but I would be surprised) of fireworks went into the air. For ten minutes nothing could be heard but "boom boom baaaaam" -- and until three in the morning the sparatic "boooom" could be heard.

Looking back I enjoyed my first Lunar New Year's Eve, including the fact that it went out with a very literal "bang."
