After Singapore a quick flight brough me to Taiwan. Mountains seemed to nestle with the clouds. The clouds seemed to blanket the sky. This view was beautiful. Until the plane dropped below the clouds, and everything became doomy, dark and wet. The plane crossed several large farm lands, and a new type of landscape that I was not used to. Once again we were on different plans (price difference of about 600NZD), and so met in the airport. Breezily walking through customs we got on a bus and started to come “home.”
A long bus ride and then a decent walk, and then up five flights of stairs, brought us to Yan-Shih’s house. We curled onto her bed and quickly fell asleep.
The next day was filled with so much excitement. Daylight brought a new city for me to explore. What I wasn’t expecting was the pollution to react negatively to my cold. Oh, my cold. Sometime in New Zealand I picked up a really bad cold, like, I wasn’t in pain and didn’t have a headache or anything, I just couldn’t stop coughing sometimes. Highly annoying.
One of the more interesting things I first saw when I arrived was Taipei 101 — for those of you who don’t know, this is the world’s tallest building. From a medium distance it doesn’t look that tall, especially considering Taipei doesn’t really have that many tall buildings (like, compared to Singapore). Until you get close, or at the bottom of it, you don’t know how tall 101 is. And when you realize, you really realize; “wowaa that is one tall freaking bamboo building.” If you are far away the feeling is the same: “how can I see that building allthe way from here still!”
I live in Taipei COUNTY and can still see Taipei 101 above the apartment rooftops.
The next few weeks consisted of decent amounts of work (at Starbucks), finding a place to live, and preparing to enter school. My next post will talk about these things more!
