The Fatherland

Published on Oct. 6, 2005 in New Zealand

Upon arriving in New Zealand my uncle met me at the airport and, after making fun of me for trying to get in the wrong side of the car (still getting used to that), we took off. The flight was overnight and the last three hours rather bumpy, so I was quite tired. We had dinner, chatted for quite some time, and I fell asleep. The bed was so warm and comfortable “ my first experience with an electric blanket. Oh, I have fallen in love. Already learning the term œkitchen bitch? from my cousin I began to realize how alike my father and my uncle are. I could write about their mannerisms, but it is eerie to finally meet somebody so similar to my old man “ the way they talk, the way they use their hands, so similar. Apparently they way I talk and use my hands especially reminds my aunt Tina of my dad. Who knew? I have enjoyed wonderful cooking and great company. Certain parts of NZ are bringing back memories “ old supermarkets or certain corners. Maybe I could just be inventing old memories though. The rules of Cricket were explained to me last night, but I still am slightly confused. Apparently games lasting up to 8 hours, that will be an experience for me. Finally, sitting in an Starbucks, I am on my second cup of coffee. Having multiple travel adaptors with me I luckily found a free outlet. Hoping to get some work done the internet is too expensive here ($6/hr). Shortly I will go online, just like in Singapore, and use Starbucks Expensive Internet to find Random Cheap Internet. Tonight is the State Cup between Auckland and Christchurch in Rugby “ and if Auckland wins they are going to get to keep it until next season. I have met and been invited by the two people working at Starbucks to a sports bar downtown (the girl’s sister owns the bar) “ so, depending how late the game continues, may or may not go (I would have to take a bus back, so that limits how late I can go out). Wish me luck, and expect a more stories to follow!
